POSITION: Executive DirectorSTATUS:30 hours weekly REPORTS TO:Chair of the GTAN BoardLiaises with the Equation Angels CEO (dotted line) “Equation”OVERVIEWThe Executive Director, in coordination with GTAN’s Board of Directors, the CEO of Equation Angels, and with the assistance of GTAN staff and volunteers, will design and direct strategies and operations that support and enhance our organizational goals tomake GTAN the Top Angel group in Canada by2022and a top 10 Angel Group in North America by2024by:
●Ensuring an awesome deal flow of investment opportunities for GTAN (and Equation) members.
●Growing/Retaining/Engaging GTAN membership.
●Securing the necessary funding and sponsorships to ensure the financial health of GTAN.ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIESWork with the GTAN Board, the GTAN volunteer members, and the CEO of Equation to achieve the following:Deal Flow
●Actively source awesome deal flow of investment opportunities by designing, implementing, and maintaining:oStrong connections to all innovation centres and investment sources in the GTAN region.oExpanding the network of innovation centres and investment deal sources throughout the rest of Ontario (in collaboration with Equation).oPosition GTAN capital as a vital and valid role in the ecosystem
●Empower membership and the GTAN Board as ambassadors to actively source deals.
●Coordinate our deal flow and selection process within the Equation selection structure.Membership
●In coordination with Equation, drive interest in angel investing and incentives to encourage membership.
●On a GTANlevel, develop and manage a process to:oIdentify, nurture and convert GTAN area investors and potential investors to GTAN membership.oOptimize member retention and engagement, in partnership with existing members and Equation staff.oEngage members with opportunities to contribute to the GTAN and Equation mission.Funding & Financial Management
●In coordination with Equation, develop and maintain a financial model that leads to self-sufficient sustainability, through:oOptimizing sponsorship funding for GTANoUncovering alternative funding sources and opportunitiesoMaintaining necessary relationships with government funding sources to ensure vital and sustainable government funding until GTAN is self-sufficient.
●Manage the financial affairs of GTAN to ensure financial viability, and ensure the Board receives accurate and timely financial reports.Leadership
●Embody and nurture an entrepreneurial drive to grow and expand GTAN.
●Establish working relationships with other like-minded investors (angel and VCs) to facilitate deal-flow and co-investment syndication.
●Consistent outreach to the greater Waterloo community to ensure GTAN and Equation are top of mind for capital with deal-flow prospects.
●Strongly represent GTAN’s needs/goals/ambitions in the greater Equation community and broader angel ecosystem.
●Work with Equation to ensure that they properly represent GTAN’s interests in the greater angel community.Administration
●Innovate, plan and manage GTAN events, in collaboration with Equation where possible, to facilitate optimal engagement and investments for GTAN members both virtually and in-person as timing allows.
●Ensure effective NACO coordination and communication
●Develop and maintain a data management system to report on the status and progress of GTAN’s activities as directed by the Board.REQUIREMENTS
●Deep knowledge of the GTAN area innovation ecosystem
●Powerful, persuasive leadership with humility, that will be recognized, respected, and consulted within the community
●Entrepreneurial drive embodying the spirit of a start-up, with strategic planning and execution skills to bring plans to fruition.
●Deep networking and interpersonal skills to drive quality deal flow, engage/increase membership, and grow sponsorship
●Well acquainted with the innovation investment journey, and demonstrate analytical and critical thinking skills to assess investment opportunities to ensure it’s the right fit for the GTAN member base
●Effective communication, administrative, and sales skills will be an asset in this role.
●Financial management experience will be important for success in this role.
