RF Engineering Specialist

This is a Contract position in Chilliwack, BC posted January 22, 2021.

The RF Engineering Specialist / Engineer will bring expertise in Radio Frequency network design and deployment to a team responsible for the planning, design, and deployment of fixed wireless services infrastructure.

You will be responsible for RF analysis; planning; design; costing; implementation; and optimization.

Responsibilities include link budget, coverage prediction, capacity dimensioning, site selection, backhaul plan, RF configuration, and site integration and optimization.

You will work closely with other members of the Engineering and build teams to ensure accurate, timely deployment of networks and will work closely with product development to ensure RF network functionality complements product development requirements.

Key responsibilities include:
• Plan and design wireless sites addition and capacity add to our broadcast sites to achieve desired coverage and capacity requirements
• Plan connectivity of point-to-point RF links and network to backhaul sites to point of presence (POPs) while achieving desired network service metrics.

• Full design accountability: Frequency and RF configuration planning for various platforms based on spectrum availability and usage: RF analysis, generate search rings, site selection, RF configuration (antenna selection, dimensioning, frequency planning, RF parameters).

• Costing of planned network build or upgrades and generate required request for capital documentation
• Develop and author engineering field plans detailing what needs to be installed and configured for the site to go live.

• Create and maintain all RF networking design supporting documentation and updating project tasks related to engineering design
• Evaluate RF performance prior to site launch and troubleshoot interference prior / post launch.

• RF optimization: Interference analysis, KPI definition and analysis, and recommend optimization steps needed to improve service and customer experience
• For senior role: mentoring other junior engineers and participate in standard / process development is essential.

Developing tools to automate tasks is also expected for senior engineers The ideal candidate will possess:
• Completion of Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Engineering or a related discipline.

Master degree preferred
• Minimum of 5 years’ of related experience with a large scale deployment (planning and design and optimization) of fixed or mobile network with LTE and 5G
• Advanced knowledge of MIMO / Antennas / small cells / RF components / Propagation modelling / call processing / performance KPIs and RAN features (carrier aggregation, load balancing, spectrum sharing,,,etc)
• Ability to develop advanced concepts, techniques, and standards for RF design, planning and implementations
• Experience, good understanding, and working knowledge in IP networking, network design methodologies & troubleshooting (Ethernet, TCP/IP, L2/L3, MPLS) Solid skills in understanding low level technical standards (3GPP / FCC / ISED)
• Expert level of radios, propagation, RF safety EMF / SC6, intermodulation, filtering and site accessories
• Experience/knowledge in line of sight microwave propagation
• Experience in technical project management and costing, and presentations
• Industry related training and experience with tier one vendors like Nokia, Ericcson and Huawei radio technologies
• In-depth knowledge and experience with RF planning (Atoll) and associated GIS tools (MapInfo)
• Sharp analytical skills and advance data analysis skills
• Excellent communications skills and the ability to present complex topics to nontechnical audiences
• Experience in writing scripts and work flaws in data processing tools (Alteryx preferred)
• Excellent business acumen and knowledge of business case development
