Alberta Electric System Operator

This is a Full-time position in Vancouver, BC posted January 22, 2023.

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System.

We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market.

Job Description The AESO is responsible for the safe, reliable and economic operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System, and in doing so procures a range of services and products and holds a number of commercial agreements which the Commercial team is charged with developing and managing.

The Director, Commercial will play a key role in enabling the transformation of the province’s electricity sector through ensuring future grid services and needs are procured and managed in a reliable , competitive and affordable manner.

The Director, Commercial will have leadership accountability for several functional managers and has overall accountability for the successful development and implementation of AESO’s commercial procurement functions and delivering commercial strategy and objectives, contractual obligations, and business decisions related to large-scale procurements and commercial management.

The Director, Commercial is responsible to assist the VP, Markets with the development of strategic business planning and to develop and implement objectives and key results for the Markets department.

This role will ensure resources and functional business practices are in place and commercial knowledge and processes are maintained and leveraged to make recommendations on procurement design and contract management .

In addition, the Director, Commercial will be responsible to build a culture of mutually beneficial business relationships with stakeholders and counterparties to support efficient outcomes for Albertans.

Internal and external stakeholder relations are critically important.

The position coordinates cross functionally with other departments and business units across the AESO and maintains relationships with commercially contracted parties, other Market Participants , external advisors and the government of Alberta .

Key aspects of the role : Business and Strategic Leadership Assist the VP, Markets with the development of strategic business plans Translate AESO’s corporate strategy into meaningful Objectives, Key Results and effectively plan resources to meet objectives.

Develop o verall team structure, manage resource planning, budgets, monitoring and forecasting of expenses Ensure adequate functional business practices, systems and processes, quality control procedures and resources are in place to support staff to perform their roles effectively and manage AESO risk Lead the design and delivery of fair, competitive procurement processes, including bilateral negotiations as required, for services and projects to support the reliable operation of Alberta’s electricity grid Define strategy for procurements and be responsible for contractual terms and obligations on behalf of the AESO Ensure required governance and approval processes in place for organizational level decisions Maintain adequate oversight of key deliverables and daily operations of the team Value and maintain high regard for cross functional collaboration Promote change initiatives across the team and the organization People Leadership Build a culture of high employee engagement, that supports AESO ’s Values, culture and Inclusion, Equity & Diversity journey Ensure staff understand how their work contributes to the AESO corporate strategy and objectives Focus on career development plans to support employee growth and grow AESO leaders .

Leverage talent programs to develop the skills and expertise to engage employees, create positive employee experiences and achieve innovative and high quality outcomes Ensuring adequate career development plans are in place to support employee growth and are aligned with succession planning Provide coaching to direct reports: Understand the pace, technical and non-technical challenges, assist leaders with your guidance and input on prioritization and risk-based decision making Provid e appropriate recognition and constructive feedback Giv e and receiving feedback with a growth mindset Effectively manage performance and holds leaders accountable when not delivering or representing the AESO values Commercial Centric Leadership Build a culture of mutually beneficial business relationships with stakeholders and counterparties to support efficient outcomes for Albertans Build and manage external relationships at a strategic and tactical level Ensure commercial procurements support the safe, reliable and economic operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System, and evolve to support the transforming grid Value continuous improvement and removing barriers Superior negotiation and conflict management skills Ensure the team’s stakeholder engagements proceed in line with AESO’s Stakeholder Engagement Framework and in manner to support effective, competitive procurements Manage counterparty disputes and escalations External spokesperson representing the AESO Desire to continuously learn and take on new challenges The experiences and capabilities that are essential for success in this role : 15 years of experience in the electric utility industry with a finance, operation or commercial focus and 8 years of experience leading experienced teams.

An undergraduate degree in business, economics, engineering, mathematics or equivalent, or experience equivalent to degree or designation.

A Masters, MBA or CFA designation would be an asset Effective working in a high pace environment which has high stakeholder demands and schedule pressures Comprehensive knowledge and experience leading and developing people Thinks and acts strategically and aligns employees to strategy and sets clear expectations Strong business acumen, including a broad understanding of the Alberta electric industry framework and legal and regulatory framework A commercially minded individual experienced leading negotiations, defining contractual obligations and leading dispute resolution A broad network of Alberta electricity market contacts that can be leveraged for support in delivery of the role Ability to communicate up and across multiple organizations, solicit alignment, gain approval for evolving strategies and solutions, and mobilize to action Financial literary with experience working with financial models Desire to establish mutually beneficial business relationships in commercially contracted initiatives Effective decision maker, takes appropriate risk and delegates decisions to appropriate levels Analytical and interpersonal skills with expertise in distilling complicated topics to a broader audience Effective at managing healthy conflict resolution with internal and external stakeholders Strong communication skills Results driven and c hampions continuous learning and process improvement Additional qualities that would be beneficial include: Experience operating assets, trading or optimizing a generation fleet in a deregulated electricity market Broad understanding of Alberta’s competitive electricity framework, electricity market design and operations, ISO rules, AUC regulatory processes Change leadership knowledge and experience Experience working with large capital projects Demonstrated ability to be innovative and agile Application deadline: February 3, 2023 The Alberta Electric System Operator is unable to accept unsolicited agency resumes.
