Managing Director

Alliance for Arts and Culture

This is a Contract position in Vancouver, BC posted January 22, 2023.

CVAC operates two community art galleries and a workshop space for youth and adults featuring about 30 exhibits annually at the Cowichan Community Centre in Duncan.The purpose of the Cowichan Valley Arts Council is to enrich community through the lens of arts and culture.

CVAC hosts the largest non-juried art show (held in May) on Vancouver Island.

In addition to regular gallery shows, CVAC programs include summer art camps for children, a speaker series and numerous workshops and courses.

CVAC’s outreach programs include a downtown art fair and a studio tour.

The non-profit group was founded in 1971 and is a registered charitable organization.

The Managing Director is responsible for overseeing, directing and developing the administrative and operational functions of CVAC, including its resources, strategy and communications, and physical and online spaces.

Responsibilities: The Managing Director oversees several part-time employees, supervising a team that handles social media marketing, programming and summer programs as well as volunteer coordination.

The Managing Director reports to the CVAC Board, works closely with the Board Executive and liaises with several board committees.

The Managing Director will have a 30-35 hour work schedule and will be required to work an occasional evening or weekend in order to accommodate gallery openings activities, including one monthly board meeting.

Qualifications: The successful candidate should have
• An understanding of the CVAC vision for the art gallery in the creative life of the community
• A certificate/diploma/university degree in a relevant discipline, ideally fine arts, cultural management and/or non-profit management or equivalent experience
• Experience in arts management
• Marketing, public relations and fundraising experience
• Effective grant writing skills and adherence to application deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work in an environment with both MS Office and MAC
• Commitment to collaboration with diverse groups
• Excellent interpersonal and time management skills
• Demonstrated experience with website creation and management
• Flexibility and responsiveness while managing multiple responsibilities
