Production Manager


This is a Contract position in Concord, ON posted January 20, 2021.

CASCADES TISSUE GROUP The Tissue Group, a division of Cascades, is the second-largest tissue producer in Canada and the fifth-largest in North America.

The Division manufactures, converts and markets a huge selection of paper products, such as hand towels, bathroom tissue, facial tissue, napkins, paper towels, wipers and dispensers for the North American away-from-home and consumer products markets.

The Group has more than 2,200 employees and operates seven manufacturing plants, nine conversion plants and four plants with both manufacturing and conversion facilities.

Your challenge Reporting to the Plant Manager, t he Production Manager is accountable for the safe and efficient operation of the paper machine, ensuring that all regulatory and developmental needs of the departments are met, and that all activities are conducted in accordance to the Cascades Operating philosophy.

Job Responsibilities Safety (Departmental compliance with all site safety programs)
• Ensuring a hazard assessment is completed and reviewed with respective workers prior to commencing any non-routine tasks;
• Ensuring that the (safe) standard operating procedures are reviewed with the respective workers prior to commencing any routine tasks that are performed infrequently by respective individual(s)
• Participate in Safety Meetings and Daily Tool Box talks
• Audits of work tasks and areas
• Area Inspections as required in the Mill
• Implementing and enforcing regulations and initiatives.

• Provide safety support for Maintenance crews working in the area.

• Compliance with regulatory requirements.

• Take action to correct reported hazards.

• Monitor work conditions and practices in all the areas of responsibility.

• Correct employees not following rules and procedures.

• Ensure lock-outs are up to date
• Participate in crew safety meetings
• Log Safety contacts with employees.

• Follow the manager’s plans to improve performance of area processes and provide feedback.

• Ensure that quality requirements are met.

• Work with LCT, coordinators and operators to ensure instructions are followed as per plan for the day.

• Make sure production targets are met.

• Ensure trouble shooting steps are taking place to correct losses or operational/quality upsets.

(Making sure the available trouble shooting checklists are being used)
• Develop and maintain troubleshooting checklists.

• Ensure proper operating procedures are in place and communicated.

• Develop operating procedures that incorporate best practices.

• Identify sources of production losses and develop plans to correct them.

• Work with manager to ensure proper supplies are in place for the operation (doctor blades, etc.).

• Work with other operating area personnel to ensure best pulp management strategies are in place and followed.

• Support other machine operations during operating difficulties and down days (cross machine support).

• Identify maintenance requirements of the area and develop operating plans to allow work to be performed efficiently.

• Work with maintenance personnel and set weekly priorities for area.

• Work with maintenance personnel and operations to set up regular maintenance shuts.

• Ensure pre-shut tasks are completed so that all things are in place prior to shut downs.

• Ensure that the Plan for the Day (P4D) is reviewed and understood by operators
• Ensure that P4D is current.

• Transfer of information to all members of the department.

• Identification of actions and needs to allow the department to function as required
– communicate strategies and action plans in support of department KPI’s.

• Work with other managers to develop good cross machine knowledge and consistency.

• Development of operators in their area.

• Work with coordinators in training and development of hourly members of the Paper Mill.

• Be a subject matter expert for your area of the operation.

IND2 Education Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Desired experience 10 years of production experience 5 years of Production Management experience P.Eng is an asset Pulp & Paper experience required Cascades believes in the success of an inclusive organization that values diversity within its team.
